Why You Need to Wash Your Pillows

Why You Need to Wash Your Pillows

When’s the last time you washed your pillow? Not just your pillowcase—we’re talking about your entire pillow. If it’s been more than a year, get ready to do some laundry.

Like many things around the house, pillows accumulate oil, dirt, bacteria, dead skin cells, and dust mites. In fact, a study conducted by UK public healthcare provider Barts and the London NHS Trust found that after two years of use, 1/3 of the pillow’s weight contains all of these dirty particles. Gross, we know.

What are dust mites?

Dust mites are microscopic creatures related to spiders that feed on dead skin cells from humans and animals. They’re likely to be the most common trigger for asthma and allergies, and a massive 80% of allergy sufferers are allergic to dust mites and their droppings. Potential allergic reactions include wheezing, sneezing, coughing, and itching.

These rascals enjoy living on beds, carpets, blankets, stuffed animals, and pillows in humid environments, so they’re found in just about every home across all the continents besides Antarctica. The majority of them die in low humidity levels and hot temperatures; however, dust mites are the ultimate villain because even their dead bodies and waste can continue to cause allergic reactions.

Fortunately, Coop pillows are both dust mite resistant and hypoallergenic, so allergy sufferers can wake up refreshed, not congested. Dust mites, begone!

Is your pillow giving you acne?

Your pillow could be causing breakouts, especially if you haven’t washed your pillow in a long while. Imagine your pillow as a sponge, absorbing your sweat, drool, oil, and hair products. Over time, this buildup can clog your pores and lead to dreaded pimples if you don’t regularly wash your pillowcase and pillow.
